Learning Method:

  • You are required to read the notes and materials given, complete the follow-up assignments on your own, send in your questions prior to your 1 hour webinar meeting (if required) and be involved in live discussion via the internet.

This intermediate level Project Management Course builds upon foundational basic project management skills by using simulations to entrench core project management processes into course participants. The simulations will enable students to apply the concepts covered in the 10 PMBOK Project
Management Knowledge areas including:

Students will use proven tools and methods to enhance their project management skills.
This intermediate level course is designed to enable students to entrench concepts contained the 10 PMBOK Project Management Knowledge Areas. The course is second of three courses that will enable participants who wish to extend their skills in order to prepare for writing the Project Management Institutes (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam. This course provides participants with a working knowledge of the fundamentals of project management principles to be applied in any industry.
At the end of this course, participates will be able to:
  1. Develop a Project Charter by establishing a project vision, cataloging the project organization, planning the approach to implementation all while creating a risk register for the project.
  2. Develop a Project Management Plan by identifying and engaging stakeholders, establishing project goals, defining project deliverables, creating a project schedule and budget, identifying and mitigating risks, while designing an effective communications strategy.
  3. Execute a project by using of status meetings and issues escalation processes.
  4. Close out a project by verifying the acceptance of the final project deliverables

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

  • Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

  • You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.

  • A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).

  • Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.

  • To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

Hello Everyone,
My name is Ron Johnson and I will be your course instructor/facilitator. I am currently the Vice President- Information Services/Rural Health and the Chief Information Officer for Eastern Health in St.John's , Newfoundland. I have overall responsibility for Health Information Management, Information Technology, Access/Security/Privacy, Clinical Engineering, Telecommunications, Decision Support, Strategic Planning, Rural Health, Legal Services, Supply Chain Management, Medical Device Reprocessing, Infrastructure Support, Environmental Services, Portering, Food Services, and Capital Equipment Planning and Capital Equipment Budgeting for the entirety of Eastern Health. Previous to this position, I was the Chief Technology Officer at Eastern Health. Prior to that, I was the Director for Materials and Biomedical Equipment Support at Eastern Health and had overall responsibility for Supply Chain Management and Biomedical Engineering. Overall I have over 23 years progressive career experience in Healthcare, managing small, medium and large scaIe projects. I hold a Diploma of Technology from College of the North Atlantic, a Bachelor of Technology from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Masters of Employment Relations from Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am also certified in Change Management and hold the professional designations of a Project Management Professional (PMP), and Certified Health Executive(CHE).
I look forward to the facilitating this learning experience.
Recent Accomplishments:
  • Designed and implemented a Remote Patient Monitoring project to monitor patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder(COPD) & Congestive Heart Failure(CHF) with the aid of a Canada Health Infoway Grant. To date over 1000 patients have been on the program with evaluation results showing increased self-management, better quality of life while reducing the need for acute care interventions. This project is one of the few in Canada to be moved to sustainability from a pilot project.
  • Led a team that redesigned Primary Care Delivery on the Bonavista Peninsula of NL. The redesign included a shift from institutional delivery of primary care to a patient centric approach with healthcare delivered by a multidisciplinary team. The redesign included technology enablers such as EMR, Telehealth, etc that connected patients from the remoteness of NL to specialists in St. John’s, NL. To date, evaluation results are showing reduction in ED visits, increased patient and provider satisfaction while shift from a disease burden model of care to a population health approach.
  • Fostered a culture of Innovation at Eastern Health that has engaged front line care givers to work collaboratively with the Chief Information Office, the Department of Health & Community Services, MUN, NLCHI, Local Startups, National & International Vendors resulting in the launch of multiple software solutions that have spurred local job creation while setting the foundation to build a sustainable Medical Technology Sector in the Province of NL.
  • Developed and Implemented and leads a Living Lab that acts as test bed from startup’s to Multi-National Firms.
