In engineering, the term “failure” defines a set of conditions under which structures, machines or their components cease to perform their intended functions. The effects of such conditions range from minor
interruptions of regular business operations to severe, high cost damages. In extreme cases, catastrophic failures culminate in complete devastation and loss of life. Effective management and prevention of
such outcomes is impossible without complete understanding of the technical issues behind a compromised integrity or operational safety of engineering systems. In this regard it is critical to develop a high degree
of professional competence at the interface of several technical disciplines including such subjects as the strength of materials, structural analysis, mechanical vibrations, fatigue and engineering
design. The present course is uniquely tailored to establish a solid knowledge base of interdisciplinary fundamentals required to successfully analyze and prevent mechanical and structural failures
of engineering systems over a broad range of applications.


The main objective of this course is to enhance professional competence of engineers, researchers, managers and technical personnel dealing with a broad range of technical issues associated
with the analysis and prevention of mechanical and structural failures of engineering systems in industrial applications.

Target Audience

This course is intended for mechanical, civil, industrial, materials, pipeline and reservoir engineers; technical consultants; designers; project managers; researchers; technicians; technologists; and other technical personnel.

Dr. Aleksandra Vinogradov, P.Eng.

Dr. Aleksandra Vinogradov, P.Eng., has extensive teaching, research and industrial experience in the fields of materials engineering, mechanical vibrations, structural analysis and design. Her research projects concerning polymers, composites, smart materials, fatigue, creep, and creep-fatigue interaction have been funded by leading US federal agencies such as NSF, NASA and DOE. Dr. Vinogradov is the author or co-author of over hundred publications including book chapters and technical articles. She has delivered invited speeches at international conferences, and provided consulting services to private industries. Dr. Vinogradov is a recipient of many prestigious honors and awards including the Best Paper Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the NASA Award of Recognition for Contribution to the US National Space Program.
