DescriptionThis two day workshop provides a detailed introduction to urban drainage design. Design guidance for solving basic problems encountered in urban drainage design is provided. The topics are hydrology including rational equation, and synthetic hydrographs; storm drain systems, energy and hydraulic grade lines, detention ponds, and stormwater management. By participating in this workshop, you will focus on the practical application of sound planning, design, construction and maintenance practices for drainage systems. The designed components include storm water facilities design, open channels and culverts. An understanding of the hydrological and hydraulic principles that underlie practical design will also be developed. Hands on working examples will be presented to demonstrate in very practical terms the pros and cons of alternative strategies, the pitfalls that can be avoided, and the design features that characterize successful installations. The uniqueness of this workshop is its emphasis on hands on exercises for designing the various components of drainage systems. You leave with the confidence that not only you understand the concepts but also you can apply the knowledge to your projects. Objective
To provide participants with a working knowledge of current methods for designing effective urban drainage systems that minimize their construction and maintenance cost, with an overview of installation and maintenance practices and procedures.
Target Audience This workshop will benefit anyone involved with municipal drainage systems design and review, the construction, design or design review of storm water drainage systems, street, highway and storm water detention systems. Including municipal, geotechnical, structural, road, drainage, mining and forestry engineers, developers, planners, consultants, supervisors, and other technical personnel responsible for drainage facilities, open channels and culverts. The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows: You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material. A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature). Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor. To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.
*Course commencement date is subject to instructor availability.
