Duration:

This course is approximately 3-4 weeks in duration.

Learning Method:

  • The PDDP program is more of a self-guided learning style.

  • You are required to read the notes and materials given, complete the follow-up assignments on your own, send in your questions prior to your 1 hour webinar meeting (if required) and be involved in live discussion via the internet.

  • Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate of completion

Objective:
To present an in-depth review of design, application and construction of flexible and rigid retaining walls systems.

Description:
The goal of this course is to provide participants with state-of-the-practice design tools and construction techniques to expand implementation of safe and cost-effective earth retention technologies. This course addresses the selection, design, construction, and performance of earth retaining structures used for support of earth fills and excavations or cut slopes. The instructor covers factors that affect wall selection. Class discussions will include design procedures and case histories, demonstrating the selection, design, and performance of various earth retaining structures. Detailed information on subsurface investigation, soil and rock property design, parameter selection, lateral earth pressures for wall system design, and load and resistance factor design (LRFD) for retaining walls is provided.

After Attending This Workshop You Will Be Able To:
  • Recognize potential applications for retention structures used in civil engineering practice
  • Select the most technically appropriate and cost-effective type of retaining wall for the application, based on a thorough knowledge of available systems
  • Examine and select appropriate material properties, soil design parameters, and earth pressure diagrams
  • Prepare conceptual and basic (i.e., for simple geometry) designs using appropriate design methods, factors of safety, earth pressure diagrams, and field verification methods, and be able to appraise contractor-submitted designs
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of retaining wall construction and maintenance design rigid and flexible retaining walls systems
  • Analyze retaining wall failure and understand reasons behind it
  • Design simple reinforced slopes using geosynthetics
  • Have a better understanding of retaining structures in terms of design, applications, development limitations and construction
  • Be able to compare different retaining systems and make an informed decision based on the technical and economic feasibility of each system

Target Audience:
Consultants; contractors; bridge/structures, geotechnical, and roadway design engineers; engineering geologists; and consultant review specialists; civil engineers; designers; construction managers; municipal and transportation engineers; owners; management, specification, and contracting specialists; construction engineers involved in design and contracting aspects of retaining structures; other technical personnel interested in the technology of building and analyzing existing retaining wall systems.

Special Features:
You will receive a free copy of the following Design software: SRWALL latest edition for Segmental Retaining Wall Design, and a hard copy of the Design Manual for Segmental Retaining Walls, provided by National Concrete Masonry Association, worth more than $240. An in class demo session will be conducted for this specific software.

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

  • Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

  • You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.

  • A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).

  • Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.

  • To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

*Course commencement date is subject to instructor availability.
