Canadian Engineering Associations and CPD Requirements
Engineering in Canada is regulated by provinces and territories, and each regulator sets its own continuing professional development (CPD) requirements. Below is a short summary of each program and a link to the regulator's official page. Units differ: most regulators count professional development hours (PDHs), while some use CE hours or credits.
Summary as of October 2026.
CPD requirements change, and exemptions, pro-rating and category limits apply in most programs. This page is a general guide only. Always confirm your requirements with your own regulator using the official links below.

Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
APEGA's revised Continuing Professional Development practice standard was published on November 1, 2025, and becomes enforceable from November 1, 2026, at each licensed professional's next annual renewal. Each annual CPD period, licensed professionals:
- Complete the mandatory online learning modules assigned in myAPEGA.
- Create, document and follow a Personal Annual Competency Evaluation (PACE) plan.
- Complete at least two CPD activities: one in the technical category and one in any other category.
- Declare at the end of the period that they followed their PACE plan, and keep supporting documentation.

Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and the PEAK program
Since January 1, 2023, professional engineers and limited licence holders in Ontario must complete PEO's mandatory CPD requirement every year, administered through the Practice Evaluation and Knowledge (PEAK) program. Licence holders who are eligible to practise complete three elements every calendar year:
- Practice Evaluation (due January 31). A questionnaire about how you practise that sets your personalized CPD target of up to 30 hours for the year (PEO notes most engineers are assigned 14 to 16 hours). Non-practising licence holders complete a survey instead and have no hours target.
- Professional Practice Module (due January 31). A self-paced online module on professional practice, engineering ethics and regulatory topics. Earlier versions of PEAK called this the ethics module.
- Continuing Professional Development Report (due December 31). A declaration of the practice-specific CPD hours you completed against your personalized target.
PEAK is mandatory, and PEO has been suspending the licences of holders who do not complete it. Fee remission and first-year licence holders are exempt. PEO Council began a comprehensive review of the CPD program in 2025, so check PEO's site for the current details.
