Description
Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) is a systematic and scientific study to analyze the impact of the traffic generated by a new development on the surrounding transportation system. A TIA is generally required to support the transportation aspects of a proposed development that has the potential to generate significant amounts of pedestrians, bicycle trips, transit users, and vehicular traffic.
The submission of TIA is a mandatory requirement by the local authorities in Canada before a development could be considered for approval. TIA is undertaken mainly to ensure that the developer address all relevant transportation issues related to the new development. The TIA provides authorities, planners and developers a framework in making critical planning decisions regarding transportation issues; thus ensuring that new developments are planned and developed in a controlled manner.

A TIA comprises of thorough understanding of study area where the new development is proposed, study of existing land uses and back ground traffic volumes, trip generation, distribution and assignment, transportation assessments and development of solutions and recommendations to mitigate the negative impacts.

Objectives
  • The scope of a TIA and when a TIA is required
  • Process and procedures of TIA
  • Analytical and traffic theories related to TIA
  • Transportation assessment principles and procedures
  • Development of necessary solutions and recommendations
  • An introduction to a software commonly used for TIA analysis
  • Provide hands on experience with traffic impact assessment with the help of case studies

Target Audience

  • Traffic engineers
  • Urban/Transportation planners
  • Local Municipality/Government Employees
  • Students of Engineering and Urban Planning
  • Graduates who are interested in pursuing their career as planners
  • Urban land/property developers
  • Architects
  • Environmental Impact Assessment consultants

Instructor
Dr. Sandeep Datla, P.Eng., is currently working with the City of Edmonton as a Senior Engineer, with over 9 years of experience in transportation planning. Major projects handled by Dr. Datla recently include: LRT planning for the City of Edmonton, Traffic impact analysis of major roadway improvements, development and validation regional transportation planning model for the City of Edmonton, and providing model inputs for numerous Traffic Impact Assessment studies.

Dr. Datla also holds Adjunct professor position with University of Regina. Dr. Datla taught several graduate level engineering classes at the University of Regina.

Dr. Datla has published five Journal papers in highly refereed transportation engineering journals and presented eleven papers in international conferences.
