Duration:

The course will take roughly 4-6 weeks in the Distance format. Equivalent to 21 hours of live instruction.

Learning Method:
  • The PDDP program is more of a self-guided learning style.

  • You are required to read the notes and materials given, complete the follow-up assignments on your own, send in your questions prior to your 1 hour webinar meeting (if required) and be involved in live discussion via the internet.

  • Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate of completion

Description
Drainage engineering practices require cooperative efforts between various disciplines. This course is intended for practicing engineers, technicians and technologists and those concerned with the Municipal and Urban Drainage systems and Management of construction site erosion. This 3-day workshop is intended for those who require better understanding of Municipal and Urban stormwater drainage systems design. Under the instructor’s guidance, the participant will be expected to complete a storm water drainage system design by using first principle methods and/or design aids .This design will cover the mechanisms affecting local erosion and losses at urban construction sites due to rainfall, nature of soil, and topographic factors.

Objective
  • To understand the basics of municipal and urban storm water system design.
  • To develop skills and capabilities of the participants to analyze new and existing stormwater drainage systems as well as to better develop the erosion control plans for construction sites.
  • To learn the basics of the water resources engineering in terms of hydrologic principles including hydrologic cycle, precipitation data, stream flow Measurements and application of stream flow data, runoff, evaporation, transpiration, and groundwater.
  • To learn applications to engineering problems related to groundwater yield, stream flow analysis and watershed Management.
  • To introduce the participants to various, and conflicting, current runoff and drainage design Methods used in water resources engineering practice.
  • To select the most appropriate design tool for different conditions.
  • The use, design, and evaluation of Construction erosion devices, including sediment basins, will be stressed. Emphasis will also be placed on meeting Specific requirements of erosion control regulations.
Target Audience
Municipal engineers; Drainage engineers, public works directors; city engineers; superintendents of operations; wastewater system managers; safety inspectors and procurement officers from municipalities; consulting engineers; technicians and technologists; sewer construction contractors and other individuals who need a basic understanding of Municipal and Urban stormwater drainage systems design.

Special Features
You will receive comprehensive course notes with all design charts, graphs and data that will serve as reference for future use. You will receive training on three of the top commercial software available in the market for the design of storm sewer systems (Storm CAD, Pond Pack for the design of drainage systems).
You will receive a limited edition version (academic version) of the CAD design software package and a reference book on Engineering Hydraulics application). You will receive a free license and training on WinTR–55 small watershed Hydrology software.

Materials Required
  • Standard engineering calculator with scientific functions
  • Laptop for software training (if available)

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

  • Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

  • You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.

  • A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).

  • Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.

  • To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

*Course commencement date is subject to instructor availability.
