Find out more on how the Professional Development Distance Program may work for you - Click here
Duration:
This course is approximately 3 weeks in duration.
Learning Method:
The PDDP program is more of a self-guided learning style.
You are required to read the notes and materials given, complete the follow-up assignments on your own, send in your questions prior to your 1 hour webinar meeting (if required) and be involved in live discussion via the internet.
Once you have completed the course, you will receive a certificate of completion
Often conventional soil mechanics does not predict the behaviour and misbehaviour of fills adequately. However, considerable knowledge and experience of the real behaviour of real fills, as placed by modern plant, has been obtained over the last decades, from instrumented embankment dams, highway constructions and from laboratory studies. An understanding of these developments is important for any civil engineer associated with their design and construction.
Description:
In this two-day course, you will obtain a comprehensive overview of the principles and techniques of design, construction and inspection of earthworks. Issues that you will address through presentations by and discussion with an expert practitioner are site development, soil properties, estimating, excavation, placing and compacting, and the legal and environmental considerations that bear on this type of construction. There will also be an opportunity to deal with current thinking on the standards and testing methods that apply to earthworks.
Objectives:
- To enable participants to design and inspect earthworks effectively
- To fully understand the related science and engineering principles
- To interpret test results and standards
- To make the best choices on construction and inspection methods
The two day course consists of lectures arranged in a sequence, which minimizes the need for prior knowledge of the subject. There will be periods for discussion. Problems will be illustrated by numerous case histories.
Special Features:
You will receive a comprehensive course notes that will serve for future use.
You will receive training on two of most poplar software in slope analysis: Slope-S, and SLIDE with free academic version of the Slope–W office suite of programs. You will receive training on SEEP-W.
Target Audience:
The course aims at providing explanations and understanding of earthworks problems, rather than just the education of technical specialists. It should be applicable to both field and design engineers, who wish to know more about fill behavior, as well as for geotechnical engineers.
The following categories would obtain the maximum benefits of the course: Geotechnical engineers and geologists, technicians and technologists, contractors, site supervisors, municipal engineers, owners/developers, contractors, engineering and architectural consultants, environmental engineers and scientists, and other individuals involved in managing projects or designing foundations and earthworks.
The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:
-
Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.
-
You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.
-
A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).
-
Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.
-
To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.
*Course commencement date is subject to instructor availability.
