Course Description

This one-day interactive course equips municipal staff, engineers, and field personnel with essential knowledge, best practices, and decision-making tools for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. Participants learn the causes and mechanisms of asphalt-paved and unpaved pavement deterioration, methods for assessing and documenting pavement distresses, and the full range of maintenance and repair solutions. The concept of “the right treatment, at the right locations, and at the right time” will be explained with real-world examples. The training emphasizes special road geometries, slower truck traffic, stop-and-go traffic, utility outages, and limited resources, with practical case studies and hands-on activities tailored to municipal realities.

Objective

Participants will understand pavement deterioration processes, accurately identify pavement issues, and select appropriate, cost-effective maintenance and repair strategies. The course bridges maintenance theory with municipal field realities, supporting proactive road management and longer-lasting roads at lower life-cycle costs. Participants are expected to learn how to use the appropriate treatment for specific pavement conditions.

Dr.Hamid Soleymani

Dr. Hamid R. Soleymani holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Civil and Transportation Engineering from Iran University of Science and Technology and a Ph.D. in Pavement and Materials Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He began his career as a postdoctoral research associate at the North Central Superpave Center at Purdue University (USA) and later served as a faculty member at the University of Alberta, teaching civil engineering materials, transportation, and pavement management systems while conducting research in highways and transportation. From 2006 to 2010, he worked with EBA Engineering Consultants as a senior pavements and materials engineer, completing numerous projects and research studies for Alberta Transportation and other agencies. He also served as Director of the Transportation Research Centre (2010–2013) and has held senior engineering roles with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure and the City of Edmonton. With over 25 years of academic, consulting, and public-sector experience, Dr. Soleymani has delivered more than 20 professional training sessions for engineers and technologists across Canada. A registered professional engineer, he has published over 80 papers and has been recognized for technical excellence and innovation. His expertise spans asphalt and Portland cement concrete, Superpave mix design, pavement design, maintenance and rehabilitation, materials characterization, mechanistic pavement design, pavement performance evaluation, and pavement management systems, making him highly qualified to provide practical, high-quality training in pavement engineering and materials.
