Description

The use of project management concepts in organizations has grown greatly in recent years, yet the need for successful project management is often overlooked. Employees can find themselves assigned to manage critical projects with little or no experience in the profession. Project failure can be directly linked to inexperience and lack of training in the project manager.

This course outlines in a detailed manner the components of the profession of Project Management. Students will study proven tools and methods. They will assess and evaluate issues and concepts in field of project management using real world projects and case studies.

This course will provide students with the project management fundamentals to succeed in their respective organizations.

Objective

This course has been is designed to help students understand some of the greatest challenges that organizations face today – the effective and efficient methods for implementing projects in organizations. Project management, referred to by Fortune magazine as the #1 career choice for the coming decade, represents a skill that is in high demand by all companies, both domestic and international. This course will provide a comprehensive overview of the skills needed and challenges to be faced in managing projects in organizations.

This course using accelerating learning provides participants with an understanding of the fundamentals of project management principles to be applied in any industry. The course is one of three courses that will enable participants who wish to extend their skills in order to prepare for writing the Project Management Institutes (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam. The PMI’s Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) concepts are closely followed in the course.

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Understand and apply the fundamental elements of project management methodologies used in the management of any project.
Develop a Project Charter.
Develop a Project Management Plan.
Discern real-life project management problems, apply the relevant project management concepts, techniques and tools to solve the problems

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.
A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).
Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.
To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ron Johnson and I will be your course instructor/facilitator. I am currently the Vice President- Information Services/Rural Health and the Chief Information Officer for Eastern Health in St.John's , Newfoundland. I have overall responsibility for Health Information Management, Information Technology, Access/Security/Privacy, Clinical Engineering, Telecommunications, Decision Support, Strategic Planning, Rural Health, Legal Services, Supply Chain Management, Medical Device Reprocessing, Infrastructure Support, Environmental Services, Portering, Food Services, and Capital Equipment Planning and Capital Equipment Budgeting for the entirety of Eastern Health. Previous to this position, I was the Chief Technology Officer at Eastern Health. Prior to that, I was the Director for Materials and Biomedical Equipment Support at Eastern Health and had overall responsibility for Supply Chain Management and Biomedical Engineering. Overall I have over 23 years progressive career experience in Healthcare, managing small, medium and large scaIe projects. I hold a Diploma of Technology from College of the North Atlantic, a Bachelor of Technology from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a Masters of Employment Relations from Memorial University of Newfoundland. I am also certified in Change Management and hold the professional designations of a Project Management Professional (PMP), and Certified Health Executive(CHE).

Recent Accomplishments:

Designed and implemented a Remote Patient Monitoring project to monitor patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder(COPD) & Congestive Heart Failure(CHF) with the aid of a Canada Health Infoway Grant. To date over 1000 patients have been on the program with evaluation results showing increased self-management, better quality of life while reducing the need for acute care interventions. This project is one of the few in Canada to be moved to sustainability from a pilot project.
Led a team that redesigned Primary Care Delivery on the Bonavista Peninsula of NL. The redesign included a shift from institutional delivery of primary care to a patient centric approach with healthcare delivered by a multidisciplinary team. The redesign included technology enablers such as EMR, Telehealth, etc that connected patients from the remoteness of NL to specialists in St. John’s, NL. To date, evaluation results are showing reduction in ED visits, increased patient and provider satisfaction while shift from a disease burden model of care to a population health approach.
Fostered a culture of Innovation at Eastern Health that has engaged front line care givers to work collaboratively with the Chief Information Office, the Department of Health & Community Services, MUN, NLCHI, Local Startups, National & International Vendors resulting in the launch of multiple software solutions that have spurred local job creation while setting the foundation to build a sustainable Medical Technology Sector in the Province of NL.
Developed and Implemented and leads a Living Lab that acts as test bed from startup’s to Multi-National Firms.
