Course Code:
This webinar introduces key principles of sediment transport in canals and rivers, covering sediment properties, transport modes, thresholds, resistance equations, load types, and practical estimation methods. Through exercises, case studies, and real‑world applications, participants gain both theoretical insight and practical tools to address erosion and sedimentation challenges effectively

Dr. John Diiwu

Dr. John Diiwu, P. Eng., FEC, EP, is a hydrologist with over 30 years experience in the practice of engineering and academia in Ghana, Italy, and Canada. He is competent in a wide range of areas, including open channel flow (hydraulic structures, sediment transport, hydropower dams, river engineering, etc.), flood studies, erosion management, water quality management, watershed protection, and stream habitat restoration. He has developed, used, and reviewed several numerical and physically based models for watershed management and regulation.

As a researcher, Dr. Diiwu has carried out several watershed studies in temperate and tropical regions of the world. He has also delivered courses on erosion and sediment transport, soil and water conservation, stormwater management, watershed hydrology, and municipal hydraulics.

Since 2003, Dr. Diiwu has shared his vast hydrology expertise and experience with professionals in Alberta. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for hydrology, University of Saskatchewan. He has published numerous high-impact papers in refereed journals and contributed to book chapters in his area of expertise. Dr. Diiwu is a Fellow of Engineers Canada.

This webinar introduces the fundamentals of sediment transport in canals and rivers, combining theory with practical applications in erosion and sedimentation engineering. Drawing on extensive experience in design, modelling, and simulation, the instructor guides participants through hands‑on demonstrations and simple computational tools that provide practical methods for estimating erosion and sedimentation.
