Course Code:
This course is divided into 2 sessions. Each session will be 6 hours in duration.
The sessions will be held on Feb 15&16, 2027. and will be held again on Aug 16-17,2027
If you are unable to attend any of the sessions a recording will be made available.

Course Description
The course offers the fundamentals of sediment transport engineering in canals and rivers. The instructor draws on his extensive experience in practical design, physical modelling, and computer simulation of sediment transport to present the theory and application of erosion and sedimentation engineering. Hands-on class tests are designed to let the audience get a feel for soil detachment and movement, and related protection measures. Simple computational aids are introduced to equip the engineers with quick, common-sense methods for estimation of erosion and sedimentation.

Objective
  • To determine when and how erosion and sedimentation take place in free surface flows
  •        To estimate the magnitude of the sediment transport in canals and rivers
  •        To get familiar with application of sediment transport engineering, dam design, stormwater management, and river engineering
  • To introduce simple computational tools and present sediment literation.

Target Audience
Hydrotechnical professionals, civil engineers, and water resources specialists from consulting firms or provincial and federal authorities with 0 to 20 years experience dealing with river structures, stormwater management, dam design, sediment exclusion from hydropower facilities, tunnels exposed to sediment transport, river crossing for bridges or pipes, irrigation canals, review of physical modelling of sediment, and application of software with features for erosion and sedimentation simulation.

Level of Course
The would be suitable for intermediate and advanced level professionals looking to upgrade their knowledge on erosion and sedimentation processes and their impacts on water quality and aquatic habitat protection and restoration.

Learning Objectives
  • Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  • Determine the minimum data they need on sediment properties for projects
  •  Determine if the sediment moves under certain hydraulic conditions
  • Predict the mode of sediment transport
  • Apply an appropriate method to estimate sediment transport capacity
  •  Use several computational tools on sediment transport engineering
  • Identify and avoid common mistakes in the areas of erosion and sedimentation related to desktop analysis, physical modelling or computational simulation.

Special Features
  • Hands-on class exercises and tests on sediment transport
  •  Several computation aids for erosion and sedimentation estimation
  • A collection of literature on erosion and sediment transport.

Material(s) Required
Laptop computer, hand-held calculator.

Dr. John Diiwu

Dr. John Diiwu, P. Eng., FEC, EP, is a hydrologist with over 30 years experience in the practice of engineering and academia in Ghana, Italy, and Canada. He is competent in a wide range of areas, including open channel flow (hydraulic structures, sediment transport, hydropower dams, river engineering, etc.), flood studies, erosion management, water quality management, watershed protection, and stream habitat restoration. He has developed, used, and reviewed several numerical and physically based models for watershed management and regulation.

As a researcher, Dr. Diiwu has carried out several watershed studies in temperate and tropical regions of the world. He has also delivered courses on erosion and sediment transport, soil and water conservation, stormwater management, watershed hydrology, and municipal hydraulics.

Since 2003, Dr. Diiwu has shared his vast hydrology expertise and experience with professionals in Alberta. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for hydrology, University of Saskatchewan. He has published numerous high-impact papers in refereed journals and contributed to book chapters in his area of expertise. Dr. Diiwu is a Fellow of Engineers Canada.
