Description

Rolling element bearing failures generally show the following pattern:

  • ~ 1/3 failures are due to fatigue,

  • ~ 1/3 failures are due to lubrication problems,

  • ~ 1/6 failures are due to contamination,

  • ~ 1/6 failures are due to other reasons (improper handling and mounting, overload, wrong or inadequate fits)

Bearing defects, at a very early-stage exhibit signature vibrations in the form of very high frequencies. It is possible to identify these symptoms at the inception and take corrective actions early.

To detect these high frequency and low amplitude vibrations, special techniques are used and need sophisticated vibration measurement (acoustic signals) and analysis. This provides an early warning and an opportunity to predict the bearing remaining life, remove the causes for malfunction, plan maintenance and circumvent breakdowns and collateral damages.

The participants will be able to understand:

  • The fundamentals of bearing failure,

  • Early bearing failure signature vibrations,

  • How to calculate bearing defect vibration frequencies,

  • The techniques used to pick up bearing failure signals, and

  • The stages of bearing failure.
