Description

This course will provide an understanding of disinfection processes in wastewater treatment. Different disinfection methods and implementation consideration will be introduced along with the design aspects.

Objective

This course will provide the fundamental concepts of disinfection process. The participant will be able to understand the purpose, application and key design considerations of each wastewater disinfection methods.

Target Audience

Managers, engineers/technicians and operators of wastewater treatment plants.

The PDDP Distance Education program works as follows:

Once you register for this course, you will be sent a login username and password for our online distance website.

You will receive the course notes in hard copy through the online website, you will receive a set of notes each week covering the course material.
A one hour video-conference session will be conducted by your instructor each week (if required). The objective of this session is to assist in solving the assignments, as well as answer student questions that should be sent to instructor early enough prior to the meeting time. In addition with being able to communicate with the instructor, you will also be able to communicate with other students in the same class and watch their questions being answered as well. (A high speed internet connection is strongly recommended for this feature).
Each set of exercises can be completed and submitted by the indicated date and your completed exercise will be marked online and and returned by your instructor.
To gain the most from your course, it is highly recommended that you participate fully in all discussions and exercises. Please remember that each course has a form of quiz or exercise at the end to test your understanding of the material. You will be informed of these dates when you receive the course schedule.

Wudneh A. Shewa

Wudneh A. Shewa, Ph.D, EIT

Dr. Wudneh has over 13 years’ experience in water supply, wastewater and solid waste engineering. His strong background in wastewater treatment and solid waste management has allowed him to supervise and manage the research the implementation of international projects such as the Resource-Oriented Sanitation concepts for peri-urban areas in Africa (ROSA). This project was a European Union funded project which deals with treatment and reuse of liquid and solid wastes. The ROSA project received the 2011 International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Award. Dr. Wudneh has also carried out research on wastewater treatment and reuse and delivered courses that include: Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Solid Waste Management, Water Supply and Wastewater Collection. In addition to teaching, he has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and a book chapter.

Dr. Wudneh has a Diploma and certificates in water supply, wastewater engineering and sanitation courses from universities in Norway, Sweden, Italy and the Netherlands. He has completed a B.Sc. in Sanitary Engineering from Arba Minch University, Ethiopia, an M.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, IIT-Roorkee, India and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Windsor, Canada.
