API 580/581 Risk-Based Inspection Methodology
This course is divided into 5 sessions. Each session will be 6 hours in duration.
The sessions will be held on Dec 01,02,03,04&07, 2026
This course will be offered in 2027 on the following dates: May 3-4-5-6-7.
If you are unable to attend any of the sessions a recording will be made available.
Course Description
The API 580 and API 581 training concentrate on the Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) methodology, which is a systematic approach to identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks associated with oil, gas, petrochemical and process industry equipment. API 580 provides a conceptual framework for designing an RBI program, whereas API 581 gives technical guidelines for implementing and carrying out such a program. In this API 580 and API 581 training, participants will learn the fundamentals of RBI, such as risk assessment based on Probability of Failure (POF), Consequence of Failure (COF) and determination of Risk. Participants will understand qualitative, quantitative and semi-quantitative approaches to RBI such as deterioration mechanisms, likelihood and consequences evaluation, and risk matrices construction.
This training will enable professionals to plan and implement an efficient inspection program that not only extends the life of equipment but also reduces operational costs by focusing on areas of highest risk and manage limited resources usefully and efficiently. Focus is drawn on tube bundle inspection/replacement decision based on cost benefit analysis and optimum bundle replacement frequency.
Companies are widely using this RBI technology to optimize their inspection and decision-making efforts.
Objective
· Introduction to the basic concept of Risk-Based Inspection and the basis for the API 580/581 RBI program and methodology
· Understand the purpose, scope, and examination of the critical steps in the RBI process
· Overview of deterioration mechanisms and failure modes affecting the plant equipment
· Introduction to the risk-based inspection priority matrix and the means to utilize its results in determining inspection priorities
· Introduction to the iso-risk plot and its use, especially in combination with the risk-based inspections priority matrix
· Discussion of risk-based inspection documentation and record-keeping needs
· Understanding the basic concepts of risk acceptance, risk assessment, risk mitigation and managing residual risk.
· Understand reassessments and means for updating RBI.
· Implementation of RBI in Oil and Gas industry.
Target Audience
· Aimed at engineers, inspectors, maintenance personnel, and operations supervisors, it provides practical opportunities to the participants for improving safety, reliability and costs of managing processes equipment in process plants.
· Individuals who are responsible for implementing risk-based inspection programs within their own company or plant facility.
· Mechanical integrity, equipment reliability, and inspection personnel who are responsible for maintaining the serviceability of process plant equipment based on a cost-effective inspection program.
· Maintenance personnel, operations supervisors, and process specialists who are expected to make decisions regarding the suitability of equipment for continued service.
